BEFORE YOUR HOME INSPECTION
KNOWING WHAT TO DO BEFORE HAVING YOUR HOME INSPECTED WILL MAKE THE PROCESS A SMOOTH ONE.
FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS:
Have all utilities turned on. This is important if you are not currently living in the house.
Provide open access to all areas that need to be checked. If you have boxes stacked against walls, even in the attic, move them at least six feet away where possible.
Keep your house as tidy as possible. Minimal clutter can make for a safer and more efficient inspection experience.
Replace any blown lightbulbs. This helps the inspector figure out if it’s just a blown bulb or if the wiring is faulty.
Put in a fresh furnace filter. Regularly replacing the filter is important for air quality and the overall functioning of your heating system. This signals that you pay attention to this detail.
Take care of any toilets that may not be functioning properly. Fixing a running toilet is easy and inexpensive and is something you can take care of on your own.
Turn all pilot lights on, including the hot water heater and any gas fireplaces you may have.
Unlock any gates, electrical boxes, crawl space, or other areas that you normally keep secure.
Take your pets out of the house or make sure they are crated.
Clear the perimeter of your house so the inspector can look at the siding, trim, and caulking around windows and doors. Clear away plant growth and stored items so the inspector can get an unimpeded look.
